Glossary

Can
Packaging container with a handle, for capacity 2 to 30 litres, with an opening.

CSEMP
Chambre Syndicale des Emballages en Matière Plastique (French Plastic Packaging Association).

Container
Packaging with a capacity from 500 to 1,200 litres on a wooden, metal or plastic pallet.

Fluorinated packaging
Patented process by which a container is blown with a gaseous mixture (nitrogen-fluorine), which chemical modifies the internal wall for this packaging (PTFE: polytetrafluoroethyle) in order to serve as a barrier for solvents (this process is already widely used on the agro-chemistry market).

Drum
Container with two openings generally from 2" to 3/4" or two openings of 2"

GRV
Grand Réservoir Vrac.
French abbreviation for a large bulk container.

IBC
Intermediate Bulk Containers
English abbreviation for this container.

Jerry-can
Rectangular-shaped container with one opening.

Drum with ring
Container equipped with a a projecting border of an appropriate form that allows handling with automatic tongs.

The drums with a ring usually have a capacity greater or equal to 120 litres.

Open Top Drum
Container with a top that has a lid practically identical to its diameter.

PE
Abbreviation for polyethylene.

HDPE
Abbreviation for high-density polyethylene.

HDPE VHMW
Abbreviation for high-density polyethylene with very high molecular weight.

PP
Abbreviation for polypropylene.

 

Bucket
Container with an opened top, injected, in the shape of a truncated cone, with a lid and a handle.


Renovation:

Renovated packaging is packaging that has been brought back to its new state, to accomplish this certain parts of the packaging may be replaced.

Reconditioning:
After renovation, the packaging is refilled.

Reuse: 
After renovation and reconditioning, the packaging is once again used for a product.

Three terms are specifically defined in the RID/ADR applicable on 1st January 1999.

Reconditioned packaging (plastic drum or jerry-can)

packaging that has been washed to give the original aspect back to the material from which it is made, all the old contents as well as the outside coatings and labels have been removed;

packaging on which all the sealing joints that are not an integral part of the packaging have been replaced; and

packaging that has been inspected after washing; packaging that shows visible damage such as tears, folds or cracks, that has damaged sealing or threaded joints or that contains other serious defects must be refused.

 

Re-designed packaging (plastic drum)

    a) obtained by conversion from one ONU type to another ONU type (i.e. 1H1 to 1H2) ; or

     

    b) having elements of the integrated structure replaced.

     

 

Reused packaging

Packaging that is inspected and declared free of defects that could effect its passing functional tests. This particularly applies to packaging that will be used again for compatible, identical or analogue merchandise and shipped within large distributions chains under the authority of the expediter of the product.
